Nelson Mandela Bay executive mayor, Retief Odendaal, said a fire in the Coega Industrial Development Zone damaged a substation which then tripped a municipal substation.
In a Facebook post, Odendaal said the fault at the Aloes Sub Station resulted in “large parts of the City on the Eastern side experiencing an electrical outage.”
“Very importantly the Motherwell Pump station is also offline which means that water from the Nooitgedacht line can’t be pumped into the City,” the Mayor said.
“We are assessing the extent of the damages and will endeavour to restore supply to all areas where possible. This is a very serious outage and has a severe impact on Coega IDZ,” he wrote.
