The Eastern Cape Department of Transport said three people were killed in a single-vehicle accident on the R-349 in East London.
Spokesperson, Unathi Binqose, said the accident happened in the early hours of Sunday morning when a VW Polo with four occupants overturned.
The driver and a passenger died on the scene, while a third person died later in hospital.
One passenger remains in Frere Hospital.
“It's alleged that driving under the influence of alcohol and reckless driving (were) cited (as) contributing factors for the accident,” Binqose said.
He said a case of culpable homicide has been opened at Kei Mouth Saps for further investigations.
