NMB Municipality sets punitive rates to save water

Nelson Mandela Bay executive mayor, Athol Trollip, has reiterated his appeal to residents to reduce water consumption or face punitive measures.

He said Metro water users had not heeded the call to reduce water consumption by 15%.

Speaking to the media on Tuesday, Trollip laid some of the blame at the door of Water Affairs Minister, Nomvula Mokonyane.

He said for two years, she had tip-toed around the ANC administration regarding reducing water consumption in Nelson Mandela Bay.

Trollip said it is now up to the DA-led coalition council to deal with this critical issue.

"The reality is now we are going to go into punitive water sanctions which means that if you are on assistance to the poor, if you use more than 400 litres a day we are going to cut your water off for that day and at midnight it will come back on again.” He said

Trollip also said that ratepayers who use more than 12 kilolitres will have to pay a step tariff.

“It’s going to become more and more expensive” he added.
