NMB Metro to hand over title deeds to 1940 recipients

Nelson Mandela Bay Metro will present title deeds to 1940 recipients in the coming weeks, some of whom have been waiting eight years.

In a weekend statement, Mayoral Committee Member for Human Settlements, Nqaba Bhanga, said that “a new era is dawning in Nelson Mandela Bay’s Human Settlements Directorate, as integrity and delivery begin to replace a legacy of corruption and collusion”.

“This will directly change the lives of over 8000 residents, from Helenvale to Veeplaas, and from Malabar to Chris Hani,’ Bhanga said.

“A title deed provides legal ownership of a home, an asset which can turn the tide on poverty for our most vulnerable residents. Owning a home is the first step,” he added.

He said that local government was meant to play a significant role in reversing the effects of spatial segregation under apartheid, through service delivery and provision of housing.

“This has been neglected in the past, at the expense of our most vulnerable residents,” said Bhanga who was elected DA Eastern Cape leader at the weekend.

He said the DA led coalition administration has “embarked on an operation to clean up the housing list and ensure all rightful home owners are in possession of a title deed”.
