South Africa is the only African country among four other counties bidding to host an Olympic qualifier extreme sports festival in 2019.
This emerged during a French delegation's visit to Nelson Mandela Bay on Friday.
The delegation was in town to inspect whether the Metro would be a suitable host for the International Extreme Sports Festival (FISE).
FISE is the largest freestyle sports event in Europe with sport codes that include BMX, skateboarding, rollerblading and wakeboarding.
Head of the Metro's Department of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture, Noxolo Mnqwazi said an R85 000 bidding fee was paid to host the festival.
"The selected venues, which include the Nelson Mandela Peace Park in Motherwell and Chevrolet Stadium in New Brighton are among communities. We've selected these venues form this reason," she said.
FISE's Business Development Manager Alexander Dardevet said other bidders include Canada, China, Japan, and France.
"We are looking to spread our series and go to other continents. South Africa is an appealing destination through heritage, culture, and history," he said.
The Metro will know the outcome of its bid to host the global sports festival at the end of January 2019.
