The PE branch of the SA Weather Service says that with half the month gone and not much rain expected over the short term, the Eastern Cape is heading for a disastrous year, as far as rainfall is concerned.
Although some good rains fell in September and partially alleviated the water crisis, it was still not enough to make a significant impact on the yearly figures.
Weather office spokesperson Garth Sampson says if some good rain does not fall before the 31st of December, Port Elizabeth will have had its 4th lowest annual rainfall on record.
East London is worse off ranking 2nd in terms of lowest ever annual rainfall. Other centers have also recorded similar low figures, with George at 6th lowest and Cradock 7th lowest.
East London and Cradock last had normal rainfall in 2014, while George and Port Elizabeth last had normal rainfall in 2015.
