NMB gives windfarm the nod

Nelson Mandela Bay's mayoral committee has given the go ahead for the 25 MW wind farm at Blue Horizon Bay.

Human Settlements Executive Director Kosalin Naicker says a second legal opinion on the application by Metrowind for Council’s Special Consent, had confirmed that there were justifiable grounds for granting the special consent.

Metrowind was one of the successful bidders in the first window for the supply of renewable energy by independent power producers.

Objections to the proposal included the health hazard that the wind farm posed to the surrounding community particularly the noise from the giant turbines; that the environmental impact assessment was flawed because of insufficient public participation and that the interests of the Blue Horizon Bay Nature Conservancy were ignored.

However, the proposal got the nod in spite of the objections.
