NMB councillor wounded in robbery incident

File

Nelson Mandela Bay ANC Ward 19 councillor Gamalihleli Maqula was shot and injured during a robbery in the city on Wednesday.

From initial reports, it is understood that Maqula was in Kwazakhele when the suspects forcefully got into his vehicle and then drove off with him.

Police spokesperson, Captain Sandra Janse Van Rensburg says SAPS Mount Road attended to a complaint in Matthew Lane in North End at around 12:15.

On arrival, they found the complainant who told police he was hijacked in Makubela Street in KwaZakhele.

He further told police he was dropped off with a gunshot wound to his left upper leg.

According to Janse van Rensburg, the complainant did not want to make an official statement at the time.

He was taken to a hospital in a private vehicle and police opened a skeleton docket of attempted murder.

Meanwhile, the FF Plus offered a message of support for Maqula.
"This armed robbery, abduction, and attempted murder of Councillor Maqula is a shocking reminder of the high levels of crime plaguing the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipal area.
"It is tragic that a public representative, who was assisting a resident in Kwazakhele, could be so brutally attacked.
"This attack should be regarded as a serious matter by both the authorities and the municipality, highlighting the urgent need for increased measures to ensure the safety of all residents," said FF Plus councillor, Bill Harrington.
