NMB Council meeting was NOT called off on advice of SAPS

Eastern Cape police have refuted claims that a crucial Nelson Mandela Bay Council meeting was called off on the advice of the SAPS.

Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant-General, Liziwe Ntshinga, said that as a standard operating procedure they monitor all potentially volatile events.

She says in the case of the Council meeting, planning was done and that the police were in a state of readiness to maintain law and order.

General Ntshinga said it was up to the organiser, in this case, the Speaker of Council, to call off any event deemed to be volatile.

Meanwhile, the Democratic Alliance in the Nelson Mandela Bay has lashed out at  Speaker, Buyelwa Mafaya for cancelling Thursday's special council meeting.

A motion of no confidence against the Metro's Executive Mayor, Mongameli Bobani was expected to be debated during the meeting.

This is after a petition said to be bearing the signatures of 117 of the 120 city councillors, was presented to Speaker,  last week.

The DA's Caucus Leader, Athol Trollip says Mafaya has erred in her decision to cancel the meeting.

Trollip says they will fight tooth and nail to make sure the meeting is once again scheduled.
