Eskom issued a warning last night that it was experiencing "severe generation capacity challenges" and that Stage 2 load shedding will continue on Thursday.
Eskom acting CEO, Jabu Mabuza says in a statement in order to protect the power system from a total collapse or blackout, Stage 2 rotational load shedding will be implemented from 9 am until 11 pm.
The embattled power utility has blamed the load shedding on five power-generating units that were not in use due to boiler tube leaks.
Mabuza on Wednesday said that some of these units had already returned to service.
Eskom's Jan Oberholzer says they've begun an investigation at the Medupi power station to find out what caused a conveyer belt to break.
Load shedding is expected to continue for the rest of the week.
Meanwhile, Eastern Cape Premier, Lubabalo Oscar Mabuyane has assured the people of the province that there will be a continued provision of government services during load shedding.
He says Municipalities in the province will be rotating power supply to communities within their jurisdictions during this period.
Mabuyane says they will ensure that personnel will be available to assist people to continue accessing government services in places where there is no power supply.
The Premier has appealed to residents to use electricity sparingly while the power-utility sorts out its maintenance issues.
The Department of Health has also made provision for back-up generators in all of the 66 district hospitals in the province.
These generators will cover essential areas during load-shedding such as maternity wards, ICU and operation theatres.
