Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality says it has taken the precautionary measure of closing several beaches temporarily due to a suspected oil spill
In a statement on Saturday, NMB said it closed Kings, Humewood, and Pollock beaches.
NMB said teams are working on the affected beaches to confirm both what seems to be an oil spill and its origin.
In the meantime, the Metro has decided to close these beaches to limit the risk to people's health.
“We had to move swiftly and close the beaches as we did not know how risky it would be to still allow people to swim,” said acting executive director, Charmaine Williams.
She said the Metro understood that the weather was “perfect for the beach”, but she appealed to the public to cooperate with their deployment teams.
