DA councilor's alleged shooters abandon bail

The four men accused of shooting and wounding Kouga DA councilor Jaques Alexander abandoned their bid for bail in the Humansdorp Magistrates Court on Friday.

Mthumzi Lani, Lutho Mbatha, Luciano Jacobs, and Athenkosi Gidane face charges of attempted murder and hijacking after firing shots at Alexander outside the municipality's main offices in Jeffreys Bay last Thursday.

During proceedings, the four told the court that they would be dropping their Legal Aid lawyer for well-known Gqeberha-based attorney, Mpumulelo 'Bond' Nyoka.

The matter has been remanded to 19 April for further investigation.

Meanwhile, outside of the court, DA supporters held a small picket with posters that read: " Justice for Jaques."

Kouga Municipality Council Speaker Brenton Williams said party members were there to offer support to Alexander.

"The DA will not be intimidated by people who are trying to destabilise the party and the municipality," he added.
