NMB beaches cleared following oil spill fears

The Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality has on Sunday confirmed that Kings Beach, Humewood Beach as well as Pollock Beach have all been cleared of any oil spill.

Municipal spokesperson Mthubanzi Mniki said this follows an investigation that confirmed that the substance found in the water was ash from the recent fires that happened in Summerstrand and surrounding areas on Friday.

He said the beaches are now cleared and are safe for bathers.

'MOVE SWIFTLY'

The municipality said it had to take precautionary measures to temporarily close the beaches on Saturday due to a suspected oil spill

“We had to move swiftly and close the beaches as we did not know how risky it would be to still allow people to swim,” said acting executive director, Charmaine Williams.

At the time, Williams said the metro understood that the weather was “perfect for the beach”, but she appealed to the public to cooperate with their deployment teams.
