A 36-year-old guide at Gondwana Private Game Reserve near Mossel Bay was killed by an elephant at the reserve on Sunday.
The guide has been identified as David Kandela.
According to a press release from Gondwana, the incident took place as one of the reserve's elephant herds was peacefully passing through the Gondwana Tented Eco Camp at around 3:00 p.m.
It is alleged that the herd had nearly passed through the camp when Kandela encountered the last elephant, just before the tragic event occurred.
Police spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Malcolm Pojie says KwaNonqaba police have opened an inquest docket.
A spokesperson for the Reserve, Jeanette Botha, described Kandela as an expert guide with a deep passion for his work.
She says he joined the team in December and his death is a profound loss to the community and the Reserve.
