NMB a "crime hot spot" - Stats SA

Nelson Mandela Bay has been identified as one of four “hot spots” in the Eastern Cape for housebreaking and burglary, according to a report released by Statistics South Africa on Thursday.

The report, based on the Victims of Crime survey and police statistics, show that areas within the metro specifically prone to these crimes are Port Elizabeth City, Bethelsdorp and Clarendon Marine.

The other three “hot spots” are in Buffalo City, Makana, specifically around Grahamstown, and to a lesser extent King Sabata Dalindyebo in the northern parts of the municipality.

The report says that there were no “hot spots” for home robberies in either of the two metropolitan areas.

It differentiates between house-breaking and burglary where there is no contact between the victim and the perpetrator and home robberies where there is such contact.

It says it was found, however, that there was a “high incidence” of home robberies in some parts of most metros as well as urban areas in the North Eastern parts of the province.

The “hot spots” that were identified were the northern parts of King Sabata Dalindyebo and southern parts of Nyandeni.

Some 43% of victims of home robberies in the Eastern Cape knew the identity of the perpetrator.
