Eastern Cape police arrested 19 motorists this past weekend for allegedly driving under the influence of alcohol.
Transport Department spokesperson Unathi Binqose says the drivers were nabbed despite the alcohol ban that was put in place two weeks ago with most of the arrests taking place after the 9 pm curfew.
Binqose says the drivers are between the ages of 24 and 53 and among those arrested was a police official, a teacher and a lawyer.
He says the motorists were all detained at police stations in the Mthatha area and some were released on bail while others had their cases postponed to Monday.
Their cases will all be postponed pending the outcome of their blood samples.
Binqose says the Department will not tolerate drunk driving as it is among the top 3 offences that lead to road fatalities.
