A night out on the town in East London ended in tragedy when a 23-year-old woman drowned at Nahoon Beach early on Monday morning.
The National Sea Rescue Institute said that she was from Komani, formerly Queenstown.
NSRI spokesperson, Craig Lambinon, said their East London duty crew was called into action just before 5 am following a report of a drowning in progress.
He said a police dive unit, as well as Buffalo City life-guards, also responded to the scene.
"On arrival on the scene, a female was found on the beach. Sadly, she was deceased following a fatal drowning incident," Lambinon said.
"We believe that a group of people had been out last night. On returning home in the morning they had decided to go for a swim. The female was caught in rip-currents while they were swimming before being washed out onto the beach."
The woman’s name has not yet been released and police have opened an inquest docket.
