Hundreds of Mossel Bay residents received an early Christmas present when a benefactor paid off their lay-by bills at a local branch of Pep Stores.
Regional manager for the Outeniqua district, Suzette Wessels, told Algoa FM News that “a gentleman approached us and said that he would like to do something good for the community in Mossel Bay at the store.”
She said the man, who wanted to remain anonymous, was willing to pay off the remaining lay-by balances of 363 customers totalling R137 000.
Wessels said the man, who lives in the Garden Route, wanted to make a difference and help people have an easier Christmas.
She was also quoted as saying that he had paid between R10 and R1300 for each of the clients, adding that in all her years this was the first time that she had witnessed this level of generosity.
According to one report, the Good Samaritan had written notes to each of the customers which he signed off simply as the “grateful humanist”.
