New political party to enter mayoral race for Nelson Mandela Bay

New political party, Building A Cohesive Society in South Africa (BACS), is planning to announce it's mayoral candidate for Nelson Mandela Bay for the upcoming local government elections.

The announcement will be made in Uitenhage on Thursday by former COPE MP, Lynda Odendaal, who established BACS a few months ago.

It was registered as a political party in April.

Odendaal, who joined the ANC in 2010 after leaving COPE a year earlier, said in previous interviews that she started the new party "because people were looking for a party that would turn the fortunes of the country around."

Speaking to Algoa FM News on Wednesday, Odendaal said her party would make a difference in Nelson Mandela Bay.

"We currently have a lot of joblessness and we're seeing a distinct lack of social cohesion and spatial development over the last number of years.  And, can I largely say in essence if you look at the Metro not much has moved forward in the last 22 years.  We do believe that as much as there are plans in place there's distinctly a lack of implementation" she said.

She also added, that the party's membership had been growing at an alarming rate which she has seen as an indication for a need for change in the political landscape of the country.

"We have not been surprised by the growth in the last two months due to the fact there is a fair amount of disillusionment in terms of where we stand economically and obviously if you look at some of the racial issues that we have seen over the last year" she said.

Odendaal said the party had been focused on growing in the Eastern Cape adding that BACS was now also represented in six other provinces.

"I think this shows that there is certainly a need for a party such as BACS.  We are looking at unity, economic fairness and ensuring  economic development and bringing that change to the Eastern Cape and other provinces that we are going to work in" she said.
