The newly elected mayor of Nelson Mandela Bay, Nqaba Bhanga, joined law enforcement agencies conducting roving roadblocks around the Metro on Sunday night.
This was to ensure compliance with tighter restrictions imposed on the Metro which was declared a Covid19 hotspot by the government.
The restrictions include tighter curfew hours between 10 PM and 4 AM and stricter trading times for retail alcohol outlets.
Bhanga said that these roving roadblocks would be conducted throughout the curfew period.
He said everyone needs to work together to stop the surge of the virus.
Meanwhile, the Government said that South Africa recorded 4 116 new coronavirus cases in a 24-hour period.
Health Minister, Dr Zweli Mkize, said the total number of cases recorded countrywide as of Sunday stood at 814 565 while 744 780 people have recovered.
He said however that the death toll from Covid19-related illnesses stands at 22 206.
Minister Mkhize says the onset of the Festive season brings added responsibility on all South Africans to take measures to prevent the spread of the coronavirus.
