Buffalo City Metro executive mayor Zukiswa Ncitha has announced that the metro will introduce a new meter reading system and do away with a flat rate billing.
This after many residents complained of inaccurate billing and being charged exorbitant amounts for water.
Speaking after a council meeting on Wednesday, mayor Ncitha said the metro decided to use the flat rate as metre readers often struggle to gain access to metres on residential properties.
Ncitha says they have budgeted R5 million to deal with water loss and the installation of the new metres.
"The Department of water affairs have contributed R2 million to help us to deal with the installation of water meters so that we can begin to charge people in line with their water consumption" she said.
