Two male cheetahs have been re-introduced into the wild in the Free State to save the animals from extinction.
The Endangered Wildlife Trust says the Free State is the only province that has not had wild cheetah for over 100 years.
The two males released at Laohu Valley Reserve near Philippolis are the first wild cheetah in the province since they were eliminated from the Free State during the colonial period.
Cheetah are classified as vulnerable by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature. It is estimated there are less than 1 000 of them in South Africa.
The two cheetahs were born in July 2010 on Amakhala Game Reserve in the Eastern Cape.
