New ambulances for the Eastern Cape

Eastern Cape Health MEC, Sicelo Gqobana, says the province's Emergency Medical Services is an extremely important Directorate which requires constant attention from the Health Ministry.

He was speaking in East London on Wednesday where he handed over 37 new ambulances to the EMS Directorate.

Gqobana said the handing over of the ambulances forms part of his Department's efforts to strengthen their resolve to improve services in the province.

"Currently the province has 306 ambulances and we are on course of reaching the 656 target. The EC Department of Health is expecting a further 110 ambulances by the end of June 2014 and a further 167 on order, which will bolster the number significantly" he said

MEC Gqobana also said the tender for an air ambulance contract will be awarded soon.

"The Department is in the final stage of awarding the tender for the air ambulance contract and is expected to have helicopters in Mthatha, EL and PE"
