The Discovery Plett Easter Games has not only become a firm favourite on the Garden Route sport calendar over the past four years, but is also a fun way of getting rid of those extra Easter-egg calories.
The event - which includes various sport disciplines from mountain biking to golf - takes place in Plettenberg Bay every year over the Easter weekend.
"The goal of the Discovery Plett Easter Games is to increase the amount of holidaymakers coming to Plett over the Easter weekend and offer them an action-filled weekend of fun for the whole family," organiser Lee Verschoor said.
He added that over the years the event had grown steadily in both support and participation from local residents and visitors. "About 1 000 people participated in the multitude of events last year."
The weekend will kick off with the Pennypinchers Cairnbrogie Trail run and MTB Nite Relay at Cairnbrogie Farm and the Discovery Golf Challenge at the Plett Country Club on Friday.
The 17km run will see participants take on a single track with breathtaking views with R10 000 in prize money up for grabs. There will also be a 12km route for social runners, a 5km fun run and a 1.5km pram-friendly Spur Kids Adventure Trail.
For the relay event, cyclists will have to challenge themselves to complete as many 5km laps in two hours.
New on this year's programme is the Discovery Plett CrossFit Games which will take place on Central Beach on Saturday. This is the first multi-discipline sporting challenge of its kind to be held in Plett and the event has been designed for the both serious CrossFit enthusiasts as well as for those who have never done it before.
Most of the action will take place at Central Beach from Saturday including a tag rugby tournament, the Discovery Beacon Isle Mile surf swim and the Pennypinchers Easter surfski singles and doubles championships.
On Sunday cyclists will participate in the Discovery Mountain Bike Challenge with a 20km and a 52km route and for the less adventurous there will be sandcastle building competition on the beach too.
Verschoor said Plett was the ideal location for such an event, as it offered beautiful beaches, running trails and mountain biking terrain. "It is the perfect outdoor adventure holiday destination."
He added that it not only boosted local tourism over weekend, but the event was also linked to local charity and upliftment programmes.
