Netball South Africa says it's deeply saddened by the passing of four people who were on their way to Cape Town for the 2021 SPAR National Netball Championships.

Three players and an official were killed in the early hours of Sunday morning when the bus in which two teams were travelling was involved in a head-on collision with another bus on the R61 near Aberdeen, in the Eastern Cape,

They were travelling towards Beaufort West.

Eastern Cape Transport Department spokesperson Unathi Binqose says the bus from Mthatha overturned, and four women were declared dead at the scene.

28 people were injured, five of them critically, and they were taken to the Midlands Provincial hospital in Aberdeen.

Netball South Africa President, Cecilia Molokwane, said they were devasted by the news and are all in mourning as those who had passed away had all been part of netball.

MEC for Sports, Arts and Culture in the Eastern Cape, Fezeka Nkomonye and Eastern Cape Netball President, Nompumelelo Javu rushed to the accident scene to support those affected by the tragedy.

The names of the victims have not yet been released.
