The National Energy Regulator of South Africa held a public hearing in Nelson Mandela Bay on Friday on a proposal to establish a wind farm at Blue Horizon Bay.
An application to establish the wind farm in the area was lodged by the developer, Metrowind.
If the project goes ahead, the nine turbines will be erected with a combined capacity of 27 megawatts, generating 80-thousand megawatt hours a year for 20 years.
But, residents are up in arms about the proposal and raised their concerns at today's hearing.
Dr Henk Botha, who represented several residents said they are very concerned by the potential noise factor associated with the wind turbines which will have a circumference of over 110 metres.
"The residents of Blue Horizon Bay are very, very concerned about the noise levels of that big windfarm on their doorstep and the effect of noise on their quality of life and their health," he said.
Dr Botha said "the nearest of these turbines will only be 712m from the nearest residence and internationally some two to three kilometres are required as the minimum distance."
He also said that should the proposal go ahead there would be major congestion as there is only one access road to Blue Horizon Bay.
"During the construction phase when some 184 abnormal loads would have to be carried we will actually be completely cut-off from the outside world because these big loads will take up the whole width of the road. If there are any emergencies the residence want to know how they will be able to get to hospital or to whereever they have to go," he added.
