The Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality says the water in the Metro complies with all set standards and is safe to drink.
The assurance follows concerns after the recent outbreak of Shigella, a bacteria that manifests in gastroenteritis, and detected mainly in the KwaZakhele area.
In a statement today the Municipality said in addition to practising and maintaining the nationally set standards for water purity, it has also increased the chlorine dosage in the drinking water.
The Metro says no link could be established between the outbreak of Shigella and the quality of drinking water in the Metro.
The Municipality says it is monitoring the situation continually and stresses there is no cause for concern.
