The DA's Retief Odendaal has been elected as the new mayor in Nelson Mandela Bay
This, after Nelson Mandela Bay councillors, ousted Executive Mayor Eugene Johnson in a no-confidence vote.
Sixty-two Councillors voted in favour of her removal and 58 voted against the motion at a council meeting in the Feather Market Centre on Wednesday afternoon.
Odendaal was elected in the early hours of Thursday morning.
Mayor Odendaal was first elected as a councillor in 2009 and served as the leader of the DA Caucus between 2014 and 2016.
Between 2016 and 2018 he served as the Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) for Budget and Treasury and was instrumental in turning the City’s finances around.
The Democratic Alliance says the Mayor and his multi-party coalition will now set about putting the metro on the path of good governance.
