The female traffic officer who was gunned down during a brazen robbery on Wednesday has been identified as 42-year-old Sonica Esmeralda Smith.
Smith was with two colleagues working at a vehicle checkpoint on the R75 near Kwadswesi when four men approached the male officer, disarming him.
Police spokesperson Colonel Priscilla Naidu says Smith who was still seated in her car tried to react but was shot in the chest.
Her gun was also stolen.
Smith was appointed in 2007 as a Provincial traffic inspector and worked for the Department for 14 years.
She leaves behind three children aged seven, 10 and 21.
Colonel Naidu says the suspects fled on foot and no arrests have been made.
