A Nelson Mandela Bay traffic official, Vuyani Totoyi has appeared in the Uitenhage magistrates court on a charge of bribery.
Police spokesperson, Warrant Officer Gerda Swart, says a man driving along the Swartkops road on Sunday was stopped by Totoyi who indicated that the driver's tyres were not road worthy.
Swart says Totoyi allegedly requested the man "to make him smile" refering to a form of bribery in exchange for cash.
She says the complainant left the scene to draw money and then reported the incident to police in Despatch.
Swart says the exchange happened in the main street of Despatch.
Totoyi was released on a warning and the case was postponed until the 26th of November for further investigation.
Forty-year old Totoyi is believe to be the brother of traffic chief Hamilton Totoyi who had been suspended last month on allegations of misconduct and insubordination.
