The Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality says it will officially launch the Bucket Eradication Programme in Khayam-nandi in Despatch on Tuesday.
Metro spokesperson, Mthubanzi Mniki says to date, the Municipality has improved access to sanitation to 91 percent.
He says the Municipality is committed to eradicating the inhumane and humiliating bucket system that is still in use in a number of local communities.
Mniki says this was the commitment made by Executive Mayor, Benson Fihla, in his State of the Metro Address last year in April.
He says in response to the Mayor's call, the Municipality's Infrastructure and Engineering Directorate, working closely with the Human Settlements Directorate, has been working around the clock, laying foundations of a plan to deliver on the Mayor's commitment.
The Deputy Minister of Water and Sanitation, Pam Tshwete, Mayor Fihla and members of the National Assembly and Provincial Legislature are expected to attend the launch.
