Justice and Correctional Services Minister, Michael Masutha, will visit St Albans Correctional Centre outside Port Elizabeth for the first time on Saturday.
His office says in a statement St Albans has been notoriously known for high levels of violent attacks of officials by inmates as well as gang related incidents.
It says the management area also experienced high levels of overcrowding across its three centres.
The aim of the Minister’s visit is to tour and assess the Remand Centre - known as Medium A - as well as to interact with stakeholders on issues affecting Correctional Services.
