Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality open Garden of Remembrance

Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality has launched a Garden of Remembrance, a first of its kind in South Africa honouring all 52 deceased councillors since 1994.

Speaking at the Donkin Reserve on Friday, House Chairperson of Parliament, Cedrick Frolick, says the garden will be a living legacy for the work councillors have done in the metro.

"The Garden of Remembrance is a living tribute to work that they have done. They have also put into place mechanisms to ensure that all contributions that elected councillors irrespective of political affiliation, their contribution in building the city, will be there as a memorial not only to their families but to those who will follow after them." says Frolick.

Executive Mayor Ben Fihla, says the project serves to unify communities in the metro.

He says the second phase of the project is to be implemented during heritage month, and includes the naming of halls, streets, and parks in honour of former councillors.

"It is a project that has a vision of the unification of the metro, bringing unity amongst the people working together. As councillors whilst we are various parties but our mission must be to work together as a group." says Fihla.
