A prominent Knysna businessman, who allegedly dragged his dog behind his sports car in Brenton-on-Lake, briefly appeared in the Knysna Magistrate's Court on Thursday.
The case against 65-year-old Petrus Meyer was postponed until September 5 for a decision to be made whether the matter will be heard in a regional or district court.
Meyer faces animal cruelty charges, after he allegedly tied a rope around the neck of his young female ridgeback, called Gina, and dragged the dog behind the vehicle on June 12.
Residents who saw the horror unfold, intervened and ensured the severely injured dog received the necessary treatment at the Knysna Veterinary Clinic.
After negotiations with Meyer, a second dog, a bullmastiff called Benji, was also removed from his care.
Knysna Animal Welfare Society chairperson, Maarten van Leeuwen said Benji had found a new home and Gina was in the process of being "adopted".
