Results of the municipal by-elections held on 13 August 2014
The Democratic Alliance (DA) has won 17 of the 25 wards contested in yesterday's by-elections with the remaining wards (8) going to the African National Congress (ANC), the Electoral Commission (IEC) announced today.
The results saw changes of party representation in four (4) wards:
- From the DA to the ANC in Ward 40 Nelson Mandela Bay (PE) in the Eastern Cape;
- From the Inkatha Freedom Party to the ANC in Ward 4 Waaihoek, KwaZulu-Natal;
- From the ANC to the DA in Ward 20 Polokwane, Limpopo; and
- From an independent candidate to the ANC on Ward 25 Rustenburg, North West.
In all other wards the party retained its representation. Three (3) wards were uncontested.
Voter turnout varied between 57.11% and 12.28% with an average of 31.75%.
The new councillors in the four (4) by-elections in the Eastern Cape are:
" Raymond Lionel Schenk of the Democratic Alliance in Ward 10 in the Ndlambe [Port Alfred] Municipality - EC105. The party retained the seat.
" Masixole Hobo of the African National Congress in Ward 11 in the Port St Johns [Port St Johns] Municipality - EC154. The party retained the seat.
" Andy George Jordan of the Democratic Alliance in Ward 10 in the Nelson Mandela Bay [Port Elizabeth] Municipality - NMA. The party retained the seat.
" Thozamile Qushani of the African National Congress in Ward 40 in the Nelson Mandela Bay [Port Elizabeth] Municipality - NMA. The ward was previously represented by the Democratic Alliance.
The new councillors in the two (2) by-elections which took place in the Free State are:
" Johan Geldenhuis of the Democratic Alliance in Ward 17 in the Moqhaka [Kroonstad] Municipality - FS201. The party retained the seat.
" Gerhardus Dirk Petrus Kotzé of the Democratic Alliance in Ward 24 in the Mangaung Metropolitan [Bloemfontein] Municipality - MAN. The party retained the seat.
The new councillors in the three (3) by-elections in Gauteng are:
" Bongani Nkomo of the Democratic Alliance in Ward 32 in the City of Johannesburg [Johannesburg] Municipality - JHB. The party retained the seat.
" Anthony William Still of the Democratic Alliance in Ward 90 in the City of Johannesburg [Johannesburg] Municipality - JHB. The party retained the seat.
" Frans Johannes Smith of the Democratic Alliance in Ward 52 in the Tshwane Metropolitan [Pretoria] Municipality - TSH. The party retained the seat.
The new councillor in the by-election in KwaZulu-Natal is:
" Mzwandile Beatus Mbhele of the African National Congress in Ward 4 in the Indaka [Waaihoek] Municipality - KZN233. The ward was previously represented by the Inkatha Freedom Party.
The new councillors in the two (2) by-elections in Limpopo are:
" Hermanus Frans Marx of the Democratic Alliance in Ward 20 in the Polokwane [Pietersburg] Municipality - LIM354. The ward was previously represented by the African National Congress.
" Roelof Frederik Lourens of the Democratic Alliance in Ward 23 in the Polokwane [Pietersburg] Municipality - LIM354. The seat was retained by the party.
Three by-elections took take place in Mpumalanga. The by-election in the Emakhazeni [Belfast] Municipality - MP314 was uncontested. The new councillors are:
" Michael Petros Ntuli of the African National Congress in Ward 2 in the Emakhazeni [Belfast] Municipality - MP314. The seat was retained by the party.
" Willem Karel De Jongh of the Democratic Alliance in Ward 14 in the Thaba Chweu [Sabie] Municipality - MP321. The seat was retained by the party.
Four (4) by-elections took place in North West. Wards 6 and 12 in the Rustenburg [Rustenburg] Municipality - NW373 were uncontested. The new councillors are:
" Cornelius Nthapeleng Morei of the African National Congress in Ward 6 in the Rustenburg [Rustenburg] Municipality - NW373. The seat was retained by the party.
" Joseph Ditsheko Ngwato of the African National Congress in Ward 12 in the Rustenburg [Rustenburg] Municipality - NW373. The seat was retained by the party.
" William Mandla Mangweni of the African National Congress in Ward 25 in the Rustenburg [Rustenburg] Municipality - NW373. The ward was previously represented by an independent councillor.
" Sandra Britz of the Democratic Alliance in Ward 22 in the Tlokwe [Potchefstroom] Municipality - NW402. The seat was retained by the party.
Two (2) by-elections took place in the Northern Cape. The new councillors are:
" Rodney Kritzinger of the Democratic Alliance in Ward 4 in the NAMA KHOI [Springbok] Municipality - NC062. The seat was retained by the party.
" Maria Bosman of the African National Congress in Ward 11 in the KHARA HAIS [Upington] Municipality - NC083. The seat was retained by the party.
Five (5) by-elections took place in the Western Cape. The new councillors are:
" Helen Carstens of the Democratic Alliance in Ward 5 in the City of Cape Town [Cape Town] Municipality - CPT. The seat was retained by the party.
" Jacques David Weber of the Democratic Alliance in Ward 54 in the City of Cape Town [Cape Town] Municipality - CPT. The seat was retained by the party.
" Lisa Valencia Pauline McBride of the Democratic Alliance in Ward 56 in the City of Cape Town [Cape Town] Municipality - CPT. The seat was retained by the party.
" Lionel Traut of the Democratic Alliance in Ward 10 in the Swartland [Malmesbury] Municipality - WC015. The seat was retained by the party.
" Rosina Henrietta Ruiters of the Democratic Alliance in Ward 13 in the Mossel Bay [Mossel Bay] Municipality - WC043. The seat was retained by the party.
