The Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality wants to speed up the provision of social housing in the metro and wants to enter into further performance agreements with the private sector in this regard.
In a report to the Human Settlements Committee, the Directorate points out that according to the Social Housing Act of 2008 and National Social Housing Policy, the municipality is required to take reasonable steps to facilitate the delivery of social housing within its jurisdiction.
Metrominute reports that this must form part of the metro’s Integrated Development Plan.
The report notes that to achieve this, it plans to call for partnership agreements from accredited Social Housing institutions and private companies that are in the business of developing social housing.
It stresses that the agreements must comply with the Municipal Finance Management Act and Municipality's Supply Chain Policy.
