Nelson Mandela Bay Mayor will not resign

Nelson Mandela Bay Mayor Ben Fihla has dispelled suggestions that he may have resigned or be planning to resign.

He told Council on Friday that he's here to stay and that no one will stand in his way of realising his mandate for the ruling party.

Fihla also announced that the Rapid Response Team would be beefed up to deal with protest action and consumer complaints.

In addition, he said the Human Settlements Directorate would table a plan at the next Council meeting to deal with the issue of the rectification of defective houses.

Meanwhile,The Nelson Mandela Bay Council has unanimously supported a resolution authorising the SA Local Government Association SALGA to sue construction companies involved in the construction of the 2010 World Cup Stadium to recover any loss the municipality may have suffered as a result of collusive tendering.

SALGA needed authorisation from the municipality before it can institute legal action against the companies.

The total cost of the stadium was just over R2 billion.

SALGA stated previously that the claim for overcharging could be as high as R619.5 million, although a more likely figure is R413 million.
