Nelson Mandela Bay mayor gets the boot

Nelson Mandela Bay executive mayor, Zanoxolo Wayile, has reportedly been axed.

The Herald reports that he was sacked by the ANC yesterday and will be replaced by 81year-old Benson Fihla.

The newspaper says deputy mayor, Nancy Sihlwayi, has also been axed and will be replaced by ANC deputy regional chairperson, Chippa Ngcolomba.

Wayile will be redeployed to parliament while Sihlwayi moves to Bhisho.

Wayile's departure comes on the heels of the resignation of ANC chairperson in Nelson Mandela Bay, former PE mayor, Nceba Faku.

The ANC in the metro said that Faku stepped out of politics to concentrate full time on his business interests.

ANC regional secretary, Zandisile Qupe, says while he was surprised at Faku's resignation, it did not mean that he's cutting ties with the ANC.

Meanwhile, two powerful trade unions have already warned against Wayile's axing.

The SA Municipal Workers Union and metal workers union Numsa, said last week that they would mobilise their partners against the move.

Samwu provincial secretary, Siphiwe Ndunyana, accused the ANC of undermining alliance structures by taking unilateral decisions on matters that affect everyone.

In an earlier interview with Algoa FM News, Numsa regional secretary, Phumzile Nodongwe, had this to say.

"It will be proper for us as an affiliate of Cosatu to actually condemn the stance that is taken by the ANC, because our understanding is that there are a lot of issues that were not addressed in terms of this Metro and issues of service delivery are being affected" he said.
