National award for Bluewater Bay Surf Lifesaving Club

Lifesaving South Africa has presented the inaugural Best Drowning Prevention Initiative trophy to the Bluewater Bay Surf Lifesaving Club despite the mass drowning in March when 6 lives were lost.

They were all members of the Motherwell Rugby Club.

Club spokesperson David Bamber says before the incident in March, there had not been a single drowning incident at Bluewater Bay in the 43 year history of the club.

He says during the tragedy on the 25th of March, when 21 bathers were caught in a sudden flash rip current, the club initiated a comprehensive drowning prevention programme.

Bamber says it was this programme that helped to save the lives of the 15 others.

The awards ceremony will be at the clubhouse in Bluewater Bay on Friday afternoon.
