Ten primary school children had a narrow escape on Thursday when the bus they were travelling in was swept off a low-water bridge on the Fish River outside Cradock and started floating down stream.
Captain Lariane jonker says the Fish River is swollen by heavy rains, but that the school bus driver still tried to cross the Drennan low water bridge on the Bloukrans farm about 40 kilometres outside Cradock.
The school bus was carrying ten children - all under the age of ten.
Jonker says the bus driver told authorities he was trying to cross the low water bridge when the bus was swept into the Fish River.
Local search and rescue teams rushed to the scene and plucked all the occupants of the bus to safety.
Miraculously, no injuries were reports.
An accident report is being investigated.
