Name change naysayers still have time to object

Any person aggrieved by the various name changes in the Eastern Cape has 30 days to directly write a letter to the Minister of Arts and Culture, Nathi Mthethwa.

This is according to the Eastern Cape arts and culture department spokesperson, Andile Nduna.

The window period starts from when the names were gazetted which means that there are 23 days left.

Nduna says this can be done by anyone who is unhappy about the name changes or even the procedure followed by the Department.

Nduna says Minister Mthethwa normally writes back to the concerned resident and this correspondence will include a plan of what the next step will be.

Meanwhile, Nelson Mandela Bay mayor, Nqaba Bhanga says he will announce details on Thursday of the Metro's plans to oppose the name changes announced for Port Elizabeth, Uitenhage and the PE Airport.

Bhanga took to Facebook on Monday to announce his opposition to the name-changes.
“I am of the opinion these new names are not inclusive and, in fact, have no isiXhosa meaning,” Bhanga said.

“While not disputing the need for geographical names that portray an inclusive country, I believe that these names have no relation to and/or connection to the people of our Metro.”

He said questions also linger about the public participation process and the inputs received.
