Mystery surrounds the disappearance of an activist in Mthatha, who has been involved in the anti-outsourcing campaign at the university's campuses.

Vusi Mahlangu, a Unisa law student, reportedly vanished on Tuesday morning after leaving a friend's residence to meet Walter Sisulu University workers , who are still protesting at the Mthatha campus in support of their campaign.

Mhlangu's friend, final year LLB student, Vuyo Mntonintshi, said he received a text message from Mahlangu on Tuesday which stated he had either been kidnapped or arrested and that he was also bleeding.

He said that was the last time that he had heard from him

Police spokesperson, Lieutenant-Colonel Mzukisi Fatyela, said  Mahlanga's disappearance was reported at the Madeira police station in Mthatha.

He said formal statements will be taken on Wednesday and a case number will be registered.

He said that at least one shot was fired and that people had been assaulted.

He claimed to have heard some people being beaten up and a shot fired at about 7:30 am. Mntonintshi said he saw the private security personnel beating up an unknown person.
