Search for Sylvester to continue

The search for Sylvester the lion who escaped from the Karoo National Park over the weekend, was thwarted yesterday by strong winds and tough terrain.

According to SA National Parks, the search will resume on Wednesday morning.

SANParks also reiterated that the decision to put Sylvester down when found, was not taken lightly.

It says a number of factors were taken into consideration, the overriding one being the threat that Sylvester poses to human life.

When Sylvester escaped from the park last year from the same spot, he killed 30 animals during the 24 days that he roamed the Karoo.

Meanwhile, the public has rallied behind Sylvester, calling on SANParks to spare him.

Comments on the Algoafmnews Facebook post, which reached more than 63 000 people on Tuesday, overwhelmingly supported moves to capture and relocate Sylvester to an appropriate sanctuary.

An online petition started yesterday has also garnered just over 600 signatures.

Sylvester was in a boma for three months last year following his recapture while SanParks decided what the best plan would be for his future. He was allegedly kicked out by another male lion which lead to his initial escape in June.

Two lions, a male and female, were eventually flown down from Limpopo to start a new "family". It is from this Boma where he escaped on the weekend.
