Police in Kariega are investigating a case of culpable homicide after a murder suspect was hit by a car.
Colonel Priscilla Naidu says a 26-year-old man allegedly bludgeoned his 72-year-old mother to death in Mondile Street in Kwanobuhle before fleeing the scene in the early hours of Monday morning.
She says Nozipho Tshem was asleep in her deceased daughter's house when her son entered the home around 02h00.
Colonel Naidu says a commotion broke out and Tshem was repeatedly struck with a hammer on the head and died at the scene.
Family members immediately went to the police station to report the murder.
While police were at the murder scene they received a complaint of culpable homicide in nearby Matanzima Street.
Colonel Naidu says it is alleged that the driver of a VW Polo hit a pedestrian and drove to the police station at 04h30 to report the matter.
She says when police arrived at the scene they determined that it was the elderly victim's son and alleged killer Siya, who had been struck and killed by the car.
Both Siya and his mother were from Cape Town but had travelled to Gqeberha earlier this month to attend her daughter's funeral.
