O.R Tambo District Municipality employees were left in shock after a shooting incident at the municipal offices in Mthatha on Monday afternoon.
The incident left a 24-year-old female Extended Public Works Programme employee dead and a security official, contracted by an outside company, critically injured.
Mayoral spokesperson Ayongezwa Lungisa told AlgoaFM News that the tragedy unfolded in the foyer of the Municipal offices at around 3pm when four shots were fired.
The lady was shot by a member of the security who then shot himself. The female was declared dead at the scene and the security officer taken to hospital in a critical condition.
Lungisa said O.R Tambo District Municipality will hold a prayer service in the Myezo municipal offices on Tuesday when the Executive Mayor will visit the family of the deceased in Ngangelizwe.
Her name has not yet been released.
