Port Elizabeth police have closed Standford Road in the vicinity of 3rd avenue in the city's Northern Areas.
Police spokesperson, Captain Johan Rheeder says around 300 community members are burning tyres and blocking the road.
Protesters claim they have been without electricity for a week due to a strike at the municipality's electricity and energy directorate.
The municipality is therefore not able to send electricians to the affected area to solve the problem.
Meanwhile, the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality says the strike amongst employees in the Supply Chain Management Division in Harrower Road was called off on Friday.
Metro spokesperson, Marthie Nel, says this follows successful negotiations between the municipal leadership, unions and the striking workers.
She says the Supply Chain Management Office receives tender documents from contractors and builders.
