File

The trial of two men charged in connection with fraud involving an amount of R29 million was postponed in the King Williams Town Magistrate’s Court on Friday.

Advocate Vuyokazi Sangoni and businessman, Poovandaren Chetty, are also charged with theft and money laundering.

A third accused, the former head of the Eastern Cape Department of Social Development, Stanley Khanyile, was shot dead recently in Alberton in Gauteng.

At the time of his death, he was the Municipal Manager of the Sedibeng Municipality.

The National Prosecuting Authority said a death certificate was presented in court and his name formally removed as an accused.

Khanyile, Sangoni, former Chief Director in the office of the HOD and Chetty, Director of Umnotho Development, were arrested during August by the members of the Anti-Corruption Task Team which comprises of the Hawks, SAPS Anti-Corruption and Crime Intelligence.

They were charged with contravening the Public Finance Management Act, fraud, theft and money laundering which involves just over R29 million.

Chetty was granted R200 000 bail and Sangoni was granted bail for R20 000.

The case was postponed to 20 November 2020 for the state to produce a new indictment and for the case to be referred to the East London High Court for trial.
