Mthatha attorney convicted of theft

File

An Mthatha attorney has been found guilty of stealing from a client.

The National Prosecuting Authority says 52-year-old Vuyani Gwebindlala was convicted in the city's Specialised Commercial Crimes Court on Monday of stealing R685 400, linked to a property purchase going back to 2008.

Spokesperson, Luxolo Tyali, said the buyer had deposited the money into his Gwebindlala Attorneys Trust Account, of which he was the sole signatory.

He said the money “was to be held until such time that the transfer of the property had been completed and duly registered after the said amount had been paid to the seller.”

Tyali said Gwebindlala, however, withdrew various amounts from the Trust Account and only paid a total of R44 600 to the seller and “misappropriated the rest” of the money.

He said the case was postponed to 6 August for sentencing procedures.
