MSC Palak released from detention at Port of Ngqura

MSC Palak

SAMSA

A vessel that lost 23 containers earlier this month due to bad weather in Algoa Bay has been released from detention in the Port of Ngqura.

The South African Maritime Safety Authority (SAMSA) says the MSC Palak was released from detention on Tuesday and allowed to sail to her next port of call.

Meanwhile, various stakeholders based in the Port of Ngqura are currently coordinating the salvage of containers and debris drifting off the coast.

SAMSA Spokesperson Tebogo Ramatjie says aerial surveillances have been carried out to spot the drifting debris along the coast.

Salvage crews using boats have towed the spotted debris to a safe place to ensure that it poses minimal risk to ships navigating along the coast.

The MSC Palak lost the containers on the 14th of July as a result of severe weather conditions in Algoa Bay.

Ramatjie says the Mediterranean Shipping Company, which owns the vessel, has given its full support to the salvaging operations.

Its further committed to be financially responsible for any clean-up that may be required in the vicinity for the next five years if deemed to be linked to the incident.
