Lawyer Dali Mpofu has been discharged from an East London hospital after he was stabbed and robbed while walking on a Buffalo City beach last week.
He said he would have to travel by road to Johannesburg as doctors had advised him not to fly because of a lung problem.
Mpofu is representing miners involved in last year's police shootings in Marikana at the Farlam Commission of Inquiry.
Mpofu was attacked by two people while walking on a beach in East London on Thursday.
He was stabbed in the upper and lower body.
Polic say investigations are continuing and no arrests had been made.
